Bachelor thesis "Assessing beetles with eDNA"

Saproxylic beetles belong to a very diverse and sensitive group of insects and are indicators for the intensity of forest management. We would like to test whether a simple cotton swab sample from the exit borehole would yield enough DNA to identify the beetle inhabiting it.

Possible research question:

Are cotton swab samples a good alternative to other sampling strategies?

Main tasks

- Method development

- Fieldwork

- Lab work (extraction of DNA)

- Statistical analysis

- Writing of thesis

Requirements

Proactive, independent, interested, and motivated.
